I thought these two stories were interesting. The first one, "Seventeen Syllables" was different to me. it did not strike me as a romance at all except for Rosie and Jesus and that was only a small part of the story. It seemed very strange to be a romance and the mother did not even love her husband. She married him because she had to. it seemed sad.
The second story, "Men in your life" was really interesting. i liked it alot and really do feel like it was a romance because of how she describes Eddie. You can tell their relationship is the stereotypical romance in the fact that they "play" togehter and enjoy being together even when they have no money. They seem to have built a sense of trust and you can tell they understand an respect eachother. i love the last line, "...but if a man gives you all the very best that he has to offer, all the time, what more could a woman want...?" She is talking about the best of them. NOt money or things. Seh is talking about a man that respects her and loves her and shows it all the time. i thought that in itself was romantic.

I got a very different reaction to "Men in your life" than you did. When I read it I thought she was being very critical of her friend's relationship but when it came to hers, she kept making excuses. She called the other men cheap, but it was okay that her Eddie was broke because he took care of her. I just thought it was very hipocritical. However, looking back on the story, I can definitely see your point of view as well. Depending on which way you look at it the tone of the story really changes.
I had a different reaction to "Men in your Life" too. I agree with KDean that she was talking down on men, but when she starting talking about how she would marry Eddie-- I kind of got the feeling that she was settling for him, maybe because there wasn't anything better???
But I do agree that the last quote was very romantic in itself.
I agree with your response in seventeen syllables, I feel that it is a sad story because of the parents relationship. I felt that her mother was wrong fro trying to tell her not to marry. It was a strange romance narrative but I seen that it was there.
That's interesting. I read The Men In My Life in a different way than you did. I read it more as her complaining about men and all their annoying things they do but then just falling victum to love itself, not men or a man in particular.
